Legend has it that Lud’s Church, a natural stone cleft sliced into the hillside above Gradbach, was the inspiration for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – a medieval tale of chivalry, bravery and honour.
Thought to have been formed by an ancient landslide, which saw a section of rock literally slip away from the hill, the deep chasm is 100 metres long and 15 metres deep.
From The Mill, walk through the beautiful Gradbach woodlands before carefully making your way down the worn stone steps leading to the heart of the ravine. There, visitors can appreciate the atmospheric beauty of the sheer stone walls rising above and wonder what other legendary figures may have once stalked its path in days gone by. Friar Tuck, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Robin Hood are all said to be linked to its mysterious past.
